The naturally aspirated 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet. The naturally aspirated 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 is the output leader at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet. The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six is the torque leader at 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet. The three larger engines all pair with the GM 10-speed automatic.

Engine availability depends on trim and configuration in both lineups rather than on the badge. Both trucks are offered in 2WD and 4WD, in Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab body styles, with multiple bed lengths. Neither truck is an all-wheel-drive vehicle.

This is where the two nameplates genuinely separate. Chevrolet fields nine Silverado 1500 trims and spreads them wider at both ends, with more entry points and more off-road variants. GMC fields eight Sierra 1500 trims and concentrates its lineup toward the premium end, anchored by Denali and Denali Ultimate.

Towing and Payload Track Your Engine and Configuration, Not the Badge

Both trucks are rated to tow up to 13,300 pounds when properly equipped. On the Sierra, that maximum requires the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel in a Double Cab 2WD with the standard bed, the Max Trailering Package, and 20-inch wheels. The by-engine ladder runs 9,400 pounds with the 2.7L TurboMax, 11,200 pounds with the 5.3L V8, 13,100 pounds with the 6.2L V8, and 13,300 pounds with the Duramax. The Max Trailering Package is what unlocks the top of each rating, and it adds a trailer brake controller, revised shock tuning, an enhanced cooling radiator, an automatic locking rear differential, and heavy-duty rear springs.

Payload follows the same logic. Adding 4WD, moving to a larger cab, or skipping the Max Trailering Package reduces these numbers. Trailer tongue weight counts against payload, so a truck loaded with passengers and cargo has less usable towing capacity than the headline figure suggests.

The Duramax Diesel Leads Both Trucks on Fuel Economy

The most efficient configuration in either lineup is the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel in 2WD, EPA-estimated at 23 city, 28 highway, and 25 combined. In 4WD the diesel rates 22 city, 26 highway, and 24 combined. Among the gasoline engines, the 2.7L TurboMax in 2WD Pro trim rates 18 city, 21 highway, and 20 combined, while the same engine in 2WD SLE and Elevation trims rates 17, 21, and 19. The 5.3L V8 in 2WD rates 16 city, 21 highway, and 18 combined on SLE, Elevation, SLT, and Denali. The 6.2L V8 in 4WD rates 15 city, 19 highway, and 16 combined. Four-wheel drive and mud-terrain tires each cost roughly one to two miles per gallon.

Two technologies support these numbers. Dynamic Fuel Management on the 5.3L V8 deactivates cylinders under light load, and automatic start-stop reduces fuel use at idle.

Crash-Test Ratings Apply to Specific Cab Configurations

Crash-test results for these trucks are cab-specific, and reading them correctly matters more than reading them favorably.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the 2026 Silverado 1500 a five-star overall rating, but that rating covers the Regular Cab and Extended Cab only. No NHTSA overall rating is currently available for the Crew Cab.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the Crew Cab instead, and those results are mixed. IIHS notes that its updated moderate overlap front rating does not apply to the GMC Sierra, so the Sierra carries no result in that test.

On the driver-assistance side, lane departure warning and lane departure prevention are standard, blind spot detection is optional, and rear automatic braking is optional. Chevy Safety Assist is standard across the Silverado lineup, and GMC Pro Safety with automatic emergency braking is standard beginning on the Sierra Pro.

The 13.4-inch diagonal center touchscreen with Google built-in and the 12.3-inch reconfigurable digital driver display appear on both trucks. On the Sierra they arrive at SLE and continue through SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, and Denali, with a seven-inch screen on the Pro. On the Silverado they arrive at LT. OnStar comes standard with a 36-month subscription covering remote start, remote lock and unlock, vehicle diagnostics, geo-fencing, and automatic collision notification, and the system supports over-the-air software updates. SiriusXM includes a three-month trial.

Super Cruise hands-free driving is available on both nameplates, not just one. It uses LiDAR map data, real-time GPS, and driver attention monitoring across more than 400,000 miles of compatible highways. 3. Does the tailgate matter? The MultiPro Tailgate is the clearest single feature that exists on one truck and not the other, and 2026 narrowed its availability, so confirm it on the specific unit you are considering.
4. What are you towing? Spec the engine to the trailer rather than the badge. If you tow near the top of the range, the Duramax and the 6.2L V8 are the two engines that get you there, and both are available under either nameplate.
